First Blog Entry

Hi everyone, this is libby. I'm still alive, yes! i have had some time away from myself as libby kirkpatrick as you may have known her. what a long and conspiring road that has led me to this moment; as i reflect on life i have to laugh as its so great to be on this mysterious journey. i was going to try and pick dates out and describe what happened in all the significant moments that have come and gone, but they veer so far from my direct relation to playing music professionally that i thought it may be too much to recount for you as reader and for me, tho it would be fun. actually, i'm preparing as though the journey is leading me back to the stage, and so it might be interesting to keep you up to date with specific events as ideas, dreams, and eventually that will lead to shows, so it will be as though i never left the music. really it was and has always been with me, and i hope it always will. sometimes it was the music of others that i borrowed as soundtrack, but for that matter, all music is borrowed, so ....

here i be. last thing i remember was doing as and updated member of society was living in portland, oregon. it was the new year and i recall doing 108 sun salutations and drawing a picture of my desired living situation for 2005. it was a little house with two beds and the radio playing and a guitar hanging on the wall, there was something on the stove. soon after that i had a dream of a lot of baby turtles swimming past me and one who stayed still, as if waiting for me. (i thought...how the heck am i s'posed to take care of this thing, i'll have to contact a pet store or something) ... ok, so its not such a mysterious thing here in some ways- adventurous woman in her early 30s gets tired of living on wind and dreams of home and family of her own, right? but the way life happens to each of us is interesting as it comes to us in a personal package much like a holiday present. maybe you made the list to santa or whoever and so you knew you set it into motion there, but the feeling of seeing the present under the tree and wondering if it could really be that shiny thing.... so the long and short of it, i came back to austin to do a show with will taylor and strings attached. it was valentines day or thereabouts, and it had been an interesting january in which id done a singing workshop with susan osbourne, (brilliant, brilliant woman) in the san juan islands (magical place where i nearly bought a house) and this ms. susan taught me a singing technique that stirred the cells in my body so that when i came back to austin and sang for my fans and friends there, i saw something different in my future. i don't know what i was heading for prior to that, some sort of fame and fortune i guess, but something in my engine had been altered and it was at that show that i spotted the shiny thing. it was a flame that id not had a chance to feed. it was valentines time, as id said, and at a dance i actually did get shot with the arrow, the poisoned arrow, the arrow of cupid...

and the flame was hungry, so i stayed in austin. i canceled the flight back to portland and the house on the san juans and let fly the flame. we made a family in less than two years, moved into our new house, and i've been here ever since - cooking, changing diapers, doing laundry nursing laughing eating dancing and now blogging. it wasn't until my baby's first year that i felt able the beginnings of an urge to get back to you about all this.... there is a lot to tell but ill save it for the songs, they pretty much punctuate each significant turning point. you will hear them, i hope. i will sing them for you.

I'm so grateful you landed back here or I would not have experienced the gift of you on Sunday. Much to be said for serendipity. Timely for me, bringing me back from a dark place...into lightness of being. Thank you! Glad I could brighten your front row... I look forward to seeing you again...I'll watch for the mailing list notice of your next performance. I believe we may have many mutual friends, literally and figuratively. =:-)

Hi there Libby.
We met sharing a hotel room with forest and elam many years ago at a music convergence in San Diego, I remember singing Hallelujah with you in the hot tub. good times.

I had a dream about you last night... and felt like you had a child in your life, then read this today. congratulations on that adventure of motherhood. If you and your family are ever in Southern CA on a tour or vacation, I have extra rooms in my house and plenty of garden space for young ones to run through. I welcome you here anytime.

Hi, Libby, I came across your site while signing up for Access U. I'm an information writer at UT by day, and blog for b5media's The Good Musician [http://www.thegoodmusician.com], and on my personal blog, Fried Okra Productions [http://friedokraproductions.blogspot.com]

I would love to do a feature on TGM about you and accessibility. I also know what it's like being a professional musician with a baby :) Visit me at either blog, or contact me through my e-mail address, and I'll come to your next gig.

Thanks!

Libby!
Sounds like lots of changes, sounds like lots of wonder. Wishing you tons of joyful moments with your new family and eager to hear your new music. My sister, Mercia, lives in Round Rock. I will try harder to put her in touch with you.
Laura and the boys send their best to you. Do you know that both John and Cannon (14 and 18) listen to you on their ipods? Cannon even plays your tunes on the piano. You've brought much joy into this family...
